ABSTRACT

In parallel to her activity as a choreographer and teacher, Hanya Holm (1893-1992) constantly pursued the elaboration of her thought laid out in notebooks, manuscripts, personal diaries, interviews, and mostly unpublished notes, written between the Thirties and Sixties and stored in the substantial Hanya Holm Papers archive at the Jerome Robbins Dance Division of the New York Public Library. The analysis of these materials has led to the reconstruction of Holm’s poetics, so far not clearly identified by critics. This points to some unexplored interpretative lines that focus on the idea that the dancer has the task of achieving transcendence, that is, of overcoming his/her own psyche, and his/her own individual and narcissistic self in order to open him/herself to a dimension of contact with the outer space and with the other. This condition may in its turn lead to the union with the archetype.
