Con la pubblicazione di questo testo e dell'Epistle, Cibber intendeva contestare il monopolio dei teatri patentati, conducendo un pesante attacco, sia dal punto di vista personale che professionale, nei confronti di Garrick, allora manager del Drury Lane. Nello stesso anno Arthur Murphy pubblica anonimamente una satira intitolata The Spouter in cui Cibber appare nei panni di Squint-eyed Pistol - l'attore geloso del successo altrui - e in cui i due testi, presentati come "Pistol's challenge to the actors", vengono parodiati.
