After having studied with James Steele Mackaye, the foremost American teacher of Delsarte's method, Stebbins, along with Mary S. Thompson, opened two Delsarte schools, one in Boston and one in New York.
The first edition of Delsartre System of Dramatic Expression consisted of an introduction and 21 lessons, included in which were a number of "aesthetic gymnastics" or physical exercices designed to promote Delsartean principles of movement and bearing. Many of the exercices and lessons are indebted to MacKaye.
After the third edition the text included a translation of a Delsatre manuscript Stebbins acquired from his widow.
Stebbins continued to add and evolve her own system of Delsartean physical culture and in the sixth enlarged and revised edition of the text she described how she incorporated the "Swedish and Ling System" of physical training and "ceremonial forms of Oriental Prayer" into her "so-called esthetic gymnastic of Delsartre's training".
