After having worked for several years as an actor, Davies became a bookseller. His knowledge of the theatrical milieu of the time found its way in his Memoirs of the Life of David Garrick of 1780 (see), a book that brought him great fame and considerable income, and in the three volumes of Dramatic Miscellanies, which contain interesting anecdotes on contemporary actors and theatre.
