After having worked as actor for various years, Davies became a bookseller. His inside knowledge of contemporary theatre was transfused into Memoirs of the Life of David Garrick, a work that brought him great fame and considerable income, and in the three volumes of Dramatic Miscellanies (1783-1784) (see), which contain interesting anecdotes on contemporary actors and theater.
