A patron of Molière and his company from 1653 to 1656, Conti became after his religious conversion, one of the most violent critics of theater and particularly of comedy. His treatise, with printing date 18 December 1666, was published posthumously, about 10 months after the death of the author. The privilege, granted by Pierre Promé, was shared by the latter with Louis Billaine who printed the text with a title page dated 1666 to allow Promé, on the basis of the previous agreements, to exhaust his stock.
