Casting director: person who coordinates the search for the actor suitable for a given role, mostly found in cinema. Must have a broad knowledge of acting, of textual and character analysis, ability to mediate between the director’s vision and the budget constraints of production, an intuitive awareness of the unexpressed potential of both professional and nonprofessional actors. Works both through prevision knowledge of actors and through auditions and improvisations. Italian theater would benefit from the use of casting directors to form theater companies, whose composition is still excessively determined by management and box-office. The use of casting directors would lead to greater quality in theater performances and offer young actors greater opportunities for leading roles, at present very scarce.
